| The very first barbecue cooking competition in the United States |
| Uvalde, Texas June 3,1972 was the site of the first barbecue cooking competition in the United States. The Uvalde Arama Days were the setting for the contest known as the " The World Champion Cow Country Cookout". It was held on the banks of Leona Creek in what is now downtown Uvalde. The winner was Kermit Hahne of Stonewall,Texas. Kermit was pitmaster of the Brazos Barristers team. The Barristers were one of, if not the first, traveling cooking teams. The above photo has the date of 1973 which is an error. This photo was from a 1986 special edition of the Uvalde Leader-News. The report of the first contest is in the 1972 edition of the Leader-News. An interesting sidebar to the story is that H.Allen Smith, noted author and contestant in the first Terlingua Chili Cook-Off was one of the head judges. |
